How to Turn off AI Overview on Google

Hide & Disable Google AI Overviews on Desktop and Mobile

Google’s new AI Overview feature now appears at the top of search results, providing AI-generated summaries for queries. While some users find it helpful, many feel it is intrusive, inaccurate, or slows down browsing. The biggest frustration? There is currently no official option to turn off Google AI Overviews completely.

However, there are several verified workarounds you can use right now to hide, disable, or bypass AI summaries and restore the classic 10-blue-links Google experience.

What is an AI Overview?

AI Overview is a new feature in Google Search that provides an informative summary above your search results when you search for a query. This feature is designed to save users’ time and effort during their search journey by providing an AI summary.

Why Users Want to Turn Off Google AI Overviews

Many users choose to disable AI Overviews because:

  • AI responses can be incorrect, outdated, or misleading
  • AI summaries push real search results below the fold
  • They reduce visibility of trustworthy websites and research sources
  • They interrupt productivity
  • They sometimes share dangerous advice (e.g., viral examples: drink urine for hydration, use “blinker fluid” to fix turn signals)

If you prefer traditional Google results without generative summaries, follow the solutions below.

How does AI Overview work on Google Search?

AI Overview is designed to help provide a small understanding or key points regarding a particular topic or query at the starting point to save users time and effort in their search journey:

  • Identifying relevant searches: Google’s system identifies and determines when an AI Overview is needed and would be most helpful. It provides an overview for searches where users would require a quick understanding of the topic or query.
  • Creating AI Summary: It collects information and data from numerous sources and Google’s knowledge base, the AI model then generates a short and clear overview that includes all the key points.
  • Providing Sources: AI Overview not only provides key information regarding users’ queries but also lists down the links to all the sources utilized for you so users can further explore and learn more about the topic.

How to Disable Google AI Overviews on Desktop

Method 1: Use the Web Filter to Hide AI Overviews (Fast & Easy)

Google recently introduced a Web filter option that shows only standard search results.

Steps (Desktop & Mobile)

  1. Search anything on Google
  2. Click Web at the top of the results page
  3. AI Overview disappears, and only normal link-based results appear

Mobile Tip: If you don’t see Web, swipe left on the category tabs.

Method 2: Add a Custom Search Engine Using udm=14 (Best Method)

This setting forces Google to always show classic results without AI summaries.

Steps to Add it in Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and enter:
chrome://settings/searchEngines
  1. Go to Manage Search Engines and Site Search
  2. Tap Add
  3. Enter:
Name: AI-Free Google
Shortcut: @web
URL: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
  1. Click Make Default

Now every search bypasses AI Overviews entirely.

Method 3: Block AI Summaries With a Chrome Extension

Another quick way to hide AI Overview sections.

Steps:

  1. Visit Chrome Web Store
  2. Search Hide Google AI Overviews
  3. Click Add to Chrome
  4. Confirm Add Extension

Method 4: Disable SGE in Search Labs

  • For this method, users need to open Google Chrome Browser on their device and ensure you are logged in the browser using your Google account with the experimental AI enabled.
  • Next, open the chrome home page and tap on the “Search Labs” icon available on the upper-right corner.
  • After this turn off the “SGE Toggles” SGE, generative AI in the Search and SGE while browsing.
  • Once you have completed this step, Relaunch Google Chrome browser and you’re done.
  • Now you can now access Google without generative AI research results popping up on your screen.
