Why does ChatGPT want my phone number?

ChatGPT requires a phone number for two main reasons:

1. Security: ChatGPT uses phone number verification to help prevent spam and abuse. This is a common practice among many online services, as it helps to ensure that users are real people and not bots.

2. Country identification: ChatGPT is not available in all countries, so it uses phone number verification to identify the country you live in. This is necessary because ChatGPT may need to tailor its responses to your country’s specific culture or language.

Using ChatGPT Without a Phone Number

1. Use WhatsApp (in some regions)

In some regions where ChatGPT might not be officially available, there’s an alternative way to verify your account without providing your phone number.

WhatsApp can be used as a verification option in specific countries, including India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Israel, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Ukraine, Malaysia, Egypt, and Turkey.

Although WhatsApp typically requires a phone number for sign-up, you have the option to use a landline or VoIP number. When you’re creating your ChatGPT account, you’ll be prompted to select your country from a drop-down menu.

If you choose one of the countries supported by WhatsApp, you’ll notice an additional question below the phone number field that asks, “Do you have WhatsApp?” click on it.

However, if you don’t see this WhatsApp verification option, it’s likely due to your current use of a VPN server located in a different country. In that case, you can either disable your VPN or switch to a server within your own country to access this feature.

Once you’ve confirmed that you have WhatsApp and selected “Yes,” you’ll be guided to send a verification code via WhatsApp. After receiving the code, you can enter it to verify your ChatGPT account, and you’ll be all set to start using ChatGPT with WhatsApp.

2. Try an online SMS verification tool
